A major campaign has been launched to make Lanzarote the first choice for people who love running.

Experts have got together to plan various actions for 2018, such as promotions at the major marathons of the world including London and Zurich.

They say Lanzarote is the ideal location to practise the increasingly popular sport of running and help has been enlisted from business and hoteliers.

Lanzarote wants to brand running under the European Sports Destination banner and is holding a series of meetings through the Society for Foreign Promotion of the island.

Tourism councillor Echedey Eugenio said there would be a close public-private partne-rship to “optimise and improve the positioning of Lanzarote as a tourist destination spe-cialised in running, a practice that has experienced an exponential boom in recent years and for which Lanzarote is ideal.”

“Not only do we have excellent weather and natural conditions but numerous events and outstanding competitions that are celebrated during practically the 12 months of the year and that in each edition attract more fans, ” he said.

Highlights include the Lanzarote International Marathon, the Haría Extreme Lanzarote, the Lanzarote Wine Run, the International Running Challenge and the Disco Night Urban Race.

Lanzarote also feels that promoting diverse events such as running helps to increase the quality of visitors to the island as they tend to have a medium-high purchasing power, spend more at the destination and show respect for the environment.
