Police make biggest-ever seizure of pure heroin at Barcelona port
Drug squad officers have made one of the largest heroin seizures ever recorded in Spain in a single raid.
National Police found the 331 kilos of high purity heroin, the majority of which was hidden among 18 tons of cement in nine containers at the port of Barcelona. It has been described as the “pure brown sugar type.”
So far, four people have been arrested, three small arms, ammunition of different calibre and four vehicles seized, one of them worth more than 100,000 euros. It had been listed as stolen in Germany.
Most of the drug was hidden in 989 bags with more than 250 grams of heroin each.
Spain’s Interior Minister Juan Ignacio Zoido gave details of the successful operation during a press conference in Barcelona, describing it as “one of the largest police seizures of heroin that has ever been registered in Spain in a single intervention,.”
The four people arrested are aged between 30 and 45 years. All of them are charged with committing the crimes of drug trafficking, illegal possession of weapons and belonging to a criminal organisation.
The investigation began after police received a tip-off of an imminent cocaine transaction between two individuals of Dominican nationality and two others of Spanish and Ecuadorian nationality.
They were later arrested in Badalonia, having to abort the transfer of 25 kilos of cocaine. Another 43 kilos were found in a house.
Further investigations into their links unearthed more cocaine at Barcelona port where nine containers waiting to be filled with drugs were found.
Nearly 1,000 bags of cocaine, each containing 250 grams, were found sandwiched between 18 tons of cement.
The investigation remains open as police try to locate other members of the distribution gang.
