Festive generosity from Amigos de Gillian Banks
The Amigos de Gillian Banks raises money for a day centre in Grana-dilla with 24 under privileged children in it.
Each year, they help pay for school uniforms, schools books, visits to local attractions, Christmas events and presents but they also care about the more basic needs of the children and start a food appeal for Christmas because the centre closes for a week.
Back in October, the charity brought 30 singers and dancers across from the UK to perform four shows on the island and raised 6000 euros in the week working in partnership with Helping Hands and Live Arico. Following this, the charity launched its choristers’ food hamper appeal and began the mission of feeding 24 children for a week during the Christmas period.
The children come from all sorts of backgrounds but basic needs are not always being met and this is how the centre and the charity can help them. The families need to feed the children and themselves whilst the centre closes and staff have a well earned break.
On Thursday 28th De-cember the charity took them all to Primark in Santa Cruz and gifted 15€ each child to buy something ‘ new ‘ for themselves for Christmas – this causes much excitement – just being able to chose clothes / underwear / novel-ties for themselves and make decisions with their ‘own ‘ money.
The following day the charity transported 66 bags for life full of food to distribute between the families for the festive period. The Mayor of Granadilla and Head of Social Services came and gave their support as well as centre staff and social workers and then of cause the families and the children. The appeal gathers momentum each year and gives great support to the families over this Christmas period when schools and centres are closed for that external support.
The look and expressions of gratitude are overwhelming and the pleasure of giving to these under privileged children basic necessities is very rewarding.
