Arona honours its sporting greats with special honour for mountaineer

Arona Volleyball was chosen as the best club of the year and the Handball club as the leader in gender equality during the XXII Arona Sports Gala 2017.

The prestigious event, post-poned from November, took place in the auditorium Infanta Leonor de Los Cristianos in what is called the sport festival of Arona. It was attended by athletes of the different sport modalities that are practised in the municipality, as well as relatives and managers of the winners.

Best team of the year went to the Arona Volleyball Club, newly promoted to the Women’s Volleyball Super League – Tenerife South, an award presented by the Director General of Sports of the Canary Islands Govern-ment, Jose Francisco Perez.

In the individual section, the best female athletes of the year, according to the press of the south of the island, was Melisa González Tudge, champion of Spain in boxing, whilst the best in masculine went to the world champion of Mixed Martial Arts, Oscar Suárez Fleitas.

The event began with the recognition of the promises of sport, very young athletes who have obtained for their clubs, regional or national champion-ships in different disciplines. Young athletes of handball, athletics, taekwondo, swim-ming, line hockey, figure skat-ing, f 21 different disciplines, graced the auditorium stage to receive their awards and congratulations from the hands of sports councillor, Juan Sebastian Roque.

But without a doubt the best moment of the Gala was played by a legend of the sport. The Mayor of the municipality, Jose Julián Mena, accompa-nied by the councillor of sports, Juan Sebastián Roque, were in charge of delivering the award to the mountaineer Leopoldo Melo Alayón “El Verde”, pioneer in the southern region of the island in the form of mountaineering. He founded the Chacacharte mountain club and created the first classic climbing route in the south (Roque de Jama 1980). This mountaineer born in the San Lorenzo Valley has conquered peaks such as Monte Rosa and Mont Blanc.

Musical performances, acro-bats and comedians, com-pleted the script of a new edition of this Gala, which aims to bring together all the athletes in a night of partying and conviviality, where the voice of the journalist Eva García acted as master of ceremonies.
