Wingate news

On Wednesday 22nd November students from Wingate School Year 10 and 11 studying IGCSE PE visited the athletics stadium at Las Americas as part of their assessed practical course component.

In a full day of athletic activity the students took place in at least five events over various distances from 100m to 3000m, as well as, the long, high and triple jump! None of them seemed to feel the pressure that they were sharing the track with a number of Olympians and World Champions! It was a thoroughly enjoyable but rewarding day although there were a few tired students the following day! This was the first of a number of visits the students will make to the stadium as they aim to improve their perfor-mances, with their top three events counting towards their final GCSE grade.

On Friday 17th November a team of 13 students from Wingate School made up of boys and girls from Years 7-9 took part in an Interschool Athletics Competition at the athletics stadium in Las Americas against schools from across the island.

The students took part in a range of events which inclu-ded 80m, long jump, 800m, shot putt and the 4x80m relay. All the children gave a great account of themselves, but stand out performances inclu-ded Liv Berlinguer winning her 80m heat and in the male and female 800m Leo Garcia and Grear Tierney did exceptio-nally well finishing 4th and 7th overall respectively. It was a fantastic experience for the students involved and they really were a credit to them-selves and the school. Special thanks to Mrs Tierney for help, advice and support on the day.
