La Laguna urged to give disabled people more sporting help
La Laguna is being urged to carry out a study to make sure all sports facilities in the municipality can be accessed by the disabled.
The plea to “end all architectural barriers” is being made by the Popular Party which also wants a special fund set up to help those with limited mobility to take part in club activities.
“We must help people with disabilities to join sports clubs,” said spokesman Antonio Alarcó. “These should promote the inclusion of people with disabilities in their sporting activities as much as possible by eliminating physical and emotional barriers. The stigma must be overcome that people with disabilities cannot and do not want to participate in sports activities.”
The motion raised by the PP also calls for the creation of a line of subsidies or financial aid to cover the total or partial share of people with disabilities, according to their economic situation, in any of the sports schools or clubs registered in the municipality, whether for school, base or federated sports. They should also be made exempt from the public price for access to sports facilities.
“We also request the creation of a municipal sports pro-gramme with sufficient human and material resources that incorporate people with disabilities to favour their normalisation and integration and the realisation of continuing education courses at an educational, training and assistance level related to adapted sport, inclusive for monitors or sports technicians “, said Sr. Alarcó.
On December 3rd, the International Day of Persons with Disabilities was cele-brated, declared in 1992 by the General Assembly of the United Nations. The purpose of this celebration is to promote the rights and welfare of all persons with disabilities in all areas of society, as well as to raise awareness of their situation in all aspects of political, social, economic and cultural life.
