Jewellery with poisonous bead seeds seized by police
Several pieces of jewellery containing potentially poisonous beads have been seized from a market in Gran Canaria.
Officers with the Tax and Border Patrol of Vecindario discovered the necklaces and bracelets on several stalls and also from a number of shops. The items might have looked very pretty but some of the beads came from poisonous plants and could have proved fatal if licked by a child or if poison had entered the bloodstream via a wound. The seeds abrus precatorius were in 25 bracelets, four rosaries and as many pendants. In total, 150 seeds of the aforementioned species, considered toxic and poisonous by AECOSAN, were seized, according to the Civil Guard.
The seller faces prosecu-tion for infringing the regulations on product safety. Police say he was warned before in 2014 when similar items were seized, also in Gran Canaria.
