The event was led by the Mayor, Escolástico Gil in the presence of Cabildo sports councillor, Cristo Pérez and a host of other guests.

Sr. Gil promised that the gala would become a biannual landmark for the munici-pality. He recalled his time as a footballer, in which he played for eight years in the chain of subsidiaries of CD Tenerife, making an affec-tionate reminder of the footballer of the sixties Santi González (who would be awarded the “Sports Lege-nd”) and for the coaches José María Ramos and Domingo Garabote, “authentic sports parents for many of us at that time.”

In the awards section of the night, Leticia Batista Negrín, champion of the Canaries Absolute Individual 2017 and runner-up of Spain 2016 of rhythmic gymnastics, was chosen as “Best athlete of the seasons 15/16 – 16/17”; while the accolade of “Best team of the seasons 15/16 -16/17” fell to the CV Elite Voleyball (volleyball), runner-up of Tenerife, champion of the Canary Islands, champion of the National Junior Superliga and seventh position in the Championship of Spain Juve-nile Feminine 2017, among other individual recognitions.

In the category of “Best Promising Athlete”, Gustavo Vidal Herrera (racquetball) was awarded, a component of the Spanish team that finished third in the 2016 World Cup and champion of Spain Youth 2017. The “Best Sports Team” “was for the Independent CB Las Rosas (Canarian bola), runner-up of the President’s Cup and the tournament Our Lady of Candelaria 2017.

During the course of the gala, different special mentions were also awarded: “Fair play and sports values” for the CDZ Esperanza alevín, (winner of the Golden Ball fair game 2015/2016); to the “Sports Re-velation” for Daniel Trujillo Suárez (First Division soccer referee); to the “Sports legend” for Santiago González Her-nández, historic player of CD Tenerife, RCD Mallorca and Elche CF of the First Division; and to the “Work in favour of sports in the municipality of El Rosario” to the family “Los Verga”, for its diffusion of the game of palo, and to the Guagüeros Cycling Club, for its contribution to the promotion of cycling.

Finally, commemorative diplomas were awarded to Daniel Lutzardo Barroso (athletics), Nelly María González Rodríguez (sailing), Daniel González Ventura (tennis) and Honorio Torres “Paspín”, for their support of the Canarian struggle.
