Puerto backs defence of women with full programme 

Puerto de la Cruz is staging more than a dozen activities in support of the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women.

The local council’s department of equality is co-ordinating the programme which includes the reading of a manifesto and a march.

There will also be cultural events, entertainment and education with the aim of reaching a broad social group. The slogan is “If you control you assault”.

The Mayor, Lope Afonso said not only the administration but the whole society in general must be aware of the “importance of reclaiming the figure of women” and convey the message that “women have everything they need to have to be, in first person, protagonist of the social life of the municipality and our community in general.”

Councillor for equality, Diana Mora said the evolution of social networks was positive but has also generated a “new way of exercising violence and different types of harassment”.

“That is why from the administrations it is our obligation to prevent them, detect and eradicate them, hence the importance of the slogan” If you control you assault, ” she said.

Activities have already started but there are still events to come.

On Wednesday November 15th, from 9.30am to 12.30am, the National Asso-ciation of Gender Cyber-violence (ANCIVIG), will give the “Seminar on the Prevention of Gender-based Violence” at the Business Initiatives Centre of Puerto de la Cruz (CIE) ). On Friday November 17th, the exhibi-tion will open: “Portuenses women. Ten names for history ” at the Popular Uni-versity.

On Tuesday, November 21st at noon in the Plenary Hall of the City, there will be a talk on risk prevention and gender violence in the use of internet and social networks and at 7pm, the evaluation of the First Conference on Coexistence and Gender in Diversity at the Popular University.

 On Friday, November 24th, the manifesto will be read on the occasion of the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women and there will be a minute’s silence at the doors of the council in memory of the victims of gender.

On Saturday November 25th, Puerto will celebrate the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women in the municipality of La Orotava where the II March against the domestic violence will be held and there will be an extensive programme of activities from 10am to 1pm.

The last week of the month will begin with the Reading Club “La Ranilla” at 8pm on Monday 27, and on Tuesday 28, from 5pm to 8pm, activities will continue with the games workshop and non-sexist toys at the Popular University. Finally, on Thursday the 30th, at 6pm at the AA.VV. de Las Dehesas will be given the talk: “The image of immigrant women in the media” by Magdalena Piñeyro.
