Huge caves appear under mountain road

A major route connecting Ayacata and Mogán in Gran Canaria is reopening after three massive caves appeared underneath it.

The mountain road to the Las Niñas Dam (GC-605) needed major reconstruction work following the partial collapse of a retaining wall.

Councillor for public works and infrastructure, Ángel Víctor Torres said the work took five months, one month longer than anticipated because of unforeseen technical issues and weather conditions. This was despite the fact that the crew worked until 9pm most days.

He apologised for the delay in the completion of the 400,000 euro project but said the detailed work had been necessary to provide motorists with greater security.

“This road is fundamental for the connection of the south with the summit,” he stressed.
