Couple holding hands struck by lightning
A Swiss couple were injured, one of them seriously, after being struck by lightning at a tourist spot.
The man and woman, aged 44 and 53, were sheltering in a 16th century defence tower and viewpoint in Calvia, Mallorca.
The “Torre de Cala” stands 60ft above sea level and is one of the highest vantage points on the holiday island.
Firemen were called in to rescue the couple after the lightning strike, with members of the specialist mountain team stretchering them down the mountainside to a waiting ambulance before going on to hospital.
More than 200 rays of lightning were recorded at the height of the storm.
It is understood the couple were holding hands and whilst one of them took the full force of the strike and the bolt went from one to the other.
