Santa Cruz confirms carnaval twinning with Cádiz
A unique twinning arrangement is being formalised between the carnival organisers of Santa Cruz and Cadiz.
The new link is being promoted in conjunction with the centenary of the formation of the first murga, of musical group, made up of sailors from the ship ‘Laya’.
The city council of Cadiz recently hosted a ceremony when signatures were put to the agreement.
“This is the beginning of something that had already begun a long time ago but it was necessary to have an act like this to seal what was becoming a reality,” said the Mayor of Cadiz, José María González Gonzalez, who recalled the two cities have been twinned since 1984.
Santa Cruz’s councillor for economic development, Alfonso Cabello Mesa thanked Cadiz for its hospitality in hosting a reception for the Tenerife delegation. He assured that the signing of the agreement will make it possible to enhance, if possible, and give even more publicity to the two carnivals of both cities.
He explained that the twinning takes place at this time, because it is precisely this year when the centenary of the arrival of the ship Laya to Tenerife from Cadiz whose crew was the first murga of the Chicharrero Carnival.
