La Palma expects record airport traffic by end of year

The increase in passenger traffic at La Palma airport confirms the growing tourist interest of the island, says the Cabildo.

Figures from the airport authority AENA show the airport of Villa de Mazo registered  110,661 move-ments in July, which represents an increase of 13.4 per cent in respect to the same month of last year.

Cabildo president, Anselmo Pestana said the data was “very positive”.

“We are confident that this growth will be maintained and will even increase by the end of the year thanks to the increase in scheduled flights,” he said.

He felt the increase in numbers had also been influenced by the new bonus applicable to regional air traffic.

Sr. Pestana said the increasing popularity of the island also meant a big boost for spending and the island’s economy and jobs.

“In the last year, up to 700 people in the tourism sector have been registered with the Social Security system, a very favourable fact that reminds us that tourism is linked to economic growth, the reduction of unemployment and increased investment expectations on the island,” said the Cabildo president.

“Looking at the current upward trend, we believe that at the end of the year the historic passenger record can be beaten at the airport of the island,” he added.
