La Orotava hosts great basketball party on special anniversary
La Orotava is to enjoy a great basketball party as it prepares to host the 20th edition of one of the most prestigious cadet tournaments in Spain and Europe.
This sporting event is part of the celebrations of the 50th anniversary of the San Isidro Basketball Club.
The International Villa de la Orotava Tournament features outstanding national and international U16 teams. Over its 20 years, it has had more than 3,000 players and each edition brings together more than 5,000 people as spectators.
Sportsmen who play or have played in the NBA like Victor Claver, Rudy Fernandez or Sergio Rodriguez, and a long list of players who have debuted in ACB, have gone through this tournament at their formative age.
The Mayor Francisco Linares praised both the tourna-ment and CB Basketball, run for 50 years by Sixto Trujillo and always overcoming obstacles.
“All sacrifice and good work has its reward and so this tournament has already consolidated in time and is a must. Today it is one of the most prestigious U16 tournaments on the national and even Euro-pean scene, and in recent years it has become an international attraction, ” he said.
Insular councillor for sports, María del Cristo Pérez said La Orotava as one of the best municipalities for its backing for basketball and extended congratulations for all those who made this tournament possible. He highlighted “the exemplary and persistent work of Sixto Trujillo” as well as the integration of women’s basketball.
Local sports councillor Eduardo Rodríguez said: “This competition is an international benchmark of basketball in which you can count on the best cadet players of Europe, and also future promises. It is a unique sporting event.”
He congratulated the entire San Isidro family for their anniversary and also for making it possible to “enjoy the best basketball”.
President of the Insular Federation of Basketball, Rafael González said this edition will have a Spanish coach. The one cloud is that an American team will not be able to take part, having been affected by the recent hurricane.
Those taking part are Real Madrid CF; FC Barcelona; Stellazzurra Basketball Academy de Italia; Alba Berlín; CB Gran Canaria; The Academy de Gran Canaria; Iberos-tar Canarias and CB San Isidro. The tournament will be played over four days in the Pavilion of the Salesian College-San Isidro and the Quiquirá Municipal Pavilion. It begins on Thursday, September 28th at 4pm, with the final match at 8pm.
On Friday, matches will be played from mid-morning and there will be clashes until 8pm. On Saturday the matches will start at 9am and will be held between the Salesian School and the Quiquirá Municipal Pavilion. The two semifinals will be played from 6pm, both in the Salesians. On Sunday morning the third and fourth places will be played. At 6pm, there will be the Triples Competition and the presentation of CB San Isidro, while the grand final will be ar 6.45pm. All this day will focus on the Salesian pavilion.
