Industrial fire created toxic cloud of magnesium

Thousands of people in three districts of Madrid were told not to leave their homes due to a toxic cloud of magnesium caused by an industrial fire.

The emergency services issued the alert to residents of the major areas of Griñón, Humanes and Moraleja de Enmedio.

Firefighters battled to control the blaze and dust at a factory stacked with 40 tons of chips of magnesium and aluminum.

One 47-year-old man suffered second degree burns and the whole industrial estate at

Fuenlabrad was evacuated. Guests staying at the Hotel Ciudad of Fuenlabrada were also told to leave because of the potential danger.

The injured man was taken to hospital.

The fire crews were unable to smother the products with water but used a special salt treatment instead.

The blaze destroyed the entire facade of the factory, together with a lorry and trailer.
