Couple arrested for Tenerife cocaine smuggling

A couple arrested for trying to smuggle cocaine into Tenerife used a young child as a decoy, say police.

The man and woman, aged 38 and 31 and both of Venezuelan nationality, were caught acting as human mules.

National Police officers based at Puerto de la Cruz-Los Realejos stopped them and found them in possession of two kilos of cocaine.

They had travelled to the Canaries from Venezuela and in order to deflect suspicion, the man used his son to pretend to be a normal family group coming into Tenerife for a holiday.

The couple carried about two kilos of cocaine in a bag – specifically 120 capsules – and are believed to be part of an international organisation.

Police say their detention reveals a new route of cocaine smuggling by air into Tenerife.

Both the man and the woman were remanded in custody whilst the child, because of his young age, was taken into care for the time being.

The investigation was carried out by national police officers belonging to the Judicial Police Brigade of the Puerto de la Cruz-Los Realejos police station.
