Biggest-ever robbery gang in Mallorca “operated for years”
Police have smashed one of the biggest robbery gangs operating on Mallorca after months of surveillance and a series of early-morning raids across the island.
More than 100 officers were involved in what is being described as “an unprecedented operation” for the Balearics.
It is believed they had been operating for years and may have netted goods and cash worth as much as ten million euros during this time.
Raids were carried out at a dozen properties in Llucmajor, Inca, Lloret de Vistalegre and the capital of Palma de Mallorca.
Ten people have been arrested, believed to be responsible for violent robberies at villas and businesses, including busting open safes and stealing cash and jewellery.
The first wave of arrests were made when some of the gang members were caught in the act of planning a new robbery. “The network operated on a strict hierarchy with each member having a specific role, whether breaking open safes, dismantling alarms, keeping watch or staking out future victims,” said a police spokesman.
Undercover officers staked out each suspect for months to work out their methods. On some occasions, a boat was used to hide the stash or transport it elsewhere.
Some of the stolen stash has been recovered, particularly jewellery, and efforts are being made to reunite it with their owners.
