A magical night under the full moon
More than 400 people gathered for a magical night in a unique place in the south of Tenerife.
Granadilla council once again organised the XIII edition of the Ruta Nocturna which started from the central square of El Medano at 9pm and ended 40 minutes under the light of the full moon at the cave of Tenerife’s first patron saint Hermano Pedro.
“El Barque” was this year’s theme, a fitting tribute to those residents of the south of Tenerife who practised it for centuries. This ancestral form of commerce, without money, was part of the landscape and history of the south. It was an exchange of experiences and wisdom, in which farmers, goats, bakers, fishermen or dairymen crossed ravines, hills and slopes to exchange goats, pigs, potatoes, fish, wine, figs, fruits or bread.
At the beginning of the show a tribute was paid to Don Isidro Casanova, a resident, pastor and poet, participant in previous editions who recently died.
“Vocal 7” provided the music and there was humour from the costume based theatre group “Thynisara’” which represented a scene based on barter.
There was also a projection of photographs on the history of the route and old images of residents of the municipality, in recognition of those people who are part of our roots and memory. At 11.30pm, it was time to return along the same route to El Medano.
The cave, known as the ere, was the place where Hermano Pedro used to tend his sheep when he was just a shepherd more than 350 years ago before he started his pastoral travels.
