Tenerife to host 2018 Women’s Basketball World Cup
Preparations have started to celebrate the 2018 Women’s Basketball World Cup in Tenerife.
La Laguna will be the main venue and Santa Cruz de Tenerife as a subsite.
The Mayor of La Laguna, José Alberto Díaz said it was a tremendous honour for the island which would be making the most of its status as host of this competition.
“It’s an important day in the history of sport in La Laguna, Tenerife and the Canary Islands because with the combined efforts of various public administrations and the generosity of the Spanish Basketball Federation, the World Cup of Women’s Basketball will be celebrated here,” he said during a ceremony to announce the details.
He said it was no accident that La Laguna had been chosen as basketball was a very popular sport in the municipality.
President of the Canary Islands Government, Fernando Clavijo thanked the Spanish Basketball Federation for its backing. “Initiatives of this type convey a philosophy of life of effort and teamwork, values that are part of the Canarian society which we want to promote,” he said.
Also present at the ceremony was president of Tenerife Cabildo, Carlos Alonso who said it had been a tremendoud team effort and he believes it will be the best World Cup so far.
Puerto de la Cruz will also be involved, with some of the training taking place in the Pabellón Díaz Molina.
There will be run-up events before the World Cup itself and the presence of men’s teams, together with various sporting activities.
