Search for teenager ends in tragedy
A search for a 17-year-old who disappeared from a beach in Gran Canaria ended in tragedy.
A full-scale rescue operation was launched by the emergency services after the teenager was reported missing.
He disappeared whilst in the beach area of Playa del Confital in the municipality of Las Palmas in the mid-afternoon.
The Maritime Rescue Helimer helicopter and boat were called in, together with the police, Red Cross, emergency medics, the fire brigade, Civil Protection, Civil Guard and divers. A team of psychologists was also alerted.
The land, sea and air search continued for the rest of the day and resumed the next morning when the body of the young man was found in the water by the divers.
No further details were released about the teenager so his nationality is not known or whether he was on holiday or lived in the Canaries.
