Challenges ahead as Granadilla appoints new soccer director

Quico de Diego will be the new sports director of the Municipal School of Soccer of Granadilla de Abona (Esmugran).

He was unveiled at a ceremony presided over by the Mayor, José Domingo Regalado; first lieutenant Mayor, Marcos González, and the councillor for sports, Sara Cano.

The new director spent five years as coach of CD Tenerife and will be in charge of 45 teams and more than 700 children of the municipality from four to 18 years.

The Mayor said the aim of appointing Quico de Diego was to unify base football in the municipality and boost the training and sportsmanship of this project. He described the new coach as “a prophet in his own land”.

Sr. Gonzalez highlighted the success of the Esmurgan project which began in 2012 and was today bearing fruits.

Sara Cano wished the new coach well, saying it was an important day for the municipality.

Quico de Diego conveyed his congratulations to his predecessors, Tote and Victor, and thanked the council for having trusted him to embark on a new stage. He stressed that “now it’s time to work; a structure has already started well and my job will be the training of coaches and footballers and to implement a game model. “

Esmugran incorporates more than 700 children of the municipality, belonging to 45 teams distributed in the schools of Granadilla, San Isidro, El Medano, Charco del Pino and Los Abrigos. The categories are from initiation to juvenile, with ages between four and 18 years.
