Angry leaders say La Gomera missing out on airport links
La Gomera has launched a campaign to get Air Europea operational on the island.
The president of the Cabildo, Casimiro Curbelo is calling on the airline and the Government of the Canary Islands to study the possibility of including La Gomera on the inter-island routes that this airline operator will start from October 30th. He wants the Canary Government to review the public service obligation (OSP) of the airport to allow the airline to do so.
The island leader says La Gomera as the only island outside the planned route map but they have asked on numerous occasions for this to be addressed and to solve the problem of connectivity. Sr. Curbelo says he will request a meeting with the air operator to address this situation and try to have the company include La Gomera among its routes between the archipelago.
“Residents of La Gomera must have the right to enjoy these new routes,” he said.
The president said they had presented numerous initiatives both in the Parliament of the Canary Islands and in the Senate to urge the State Government to solve the problems presented by the island airport in terms of connectivity, among other factors. “We have waged the battle to solve the problems presented by the airport but far from being fixed we are left off these inter-island routes opening a gap that generates more inequalities between the islands,” he lamented.
La Gomera socialists had proposed 32 amendments to the General State Budget which included several initiatives aimed at improving the Gomero airport, such as the application of a flat rate on inter-island flights, the drafting of a study on a runway extension and the creation of a zone of load of fuel in the airport enclosure.
