New lease of life for iconic lighthouse
The iconic Maspalomas lighthouse on Gran Canaria could open as a craft shop and tourist information point from next year.
The island’s Cabildo has put the 1.7 million euro project out to tender following problems with the original contract which was cancelled and work suspended.
The works will see conservation and enhancement of the lighthouse which will also incorporate an ethnographic centre.
The Cabildo had been trying since 2015 to unlock the difficulties with the future of the lighthouse, a listed building considered of great importance to both Gran Canaria and the rest of the Canaries.
Millions of visitors of all nationalities spend their holidays in full view of the imposing building.
Companies interested have been invited to submit their proposals by June 28th via the website www.fedac.org.
