Woman saved but man drowns in Playa del Inglés tragedy
Two people were rescued after getting into difficulties in the sea off a popular Gran Canaria beach but sadly, only one of them survived.
The tragedy happend on the afternoon of New Year’s Day at Playa del Inglés in the municipality of San Bartolomé de Tirajana.
The 112 emergency control centre received a call about two people being in distress in the water.
One of these people, a woman, was rescued by other bathers who were on the beach. Doctors found she had mild hypothermia, so after being assisted and stabilised was transferred by ambulance to a local health centre.
The other person, a man, was rescued by Red Cross workers based on the beach. Once out of the water, and after finding that the bather was in a cardiorespiratory arrest, the rescuers began to practice cardiopulmonary resuscitation until Canary medics arrived on the scene and took over. However, they were unable to revive the man and could only confirm his death.
No details were released about their identity.
