Annual ceremony honours top athletes, teams and supporters of 2016

The athlete Naná Jacob and the paraglider Yeray González have been honoured as the best sportpeople of Los Realejos in 2016.

María Rodríguez was judged to have the best promise and the Intara Club of First Category and the infants of the Club Volleyball Mencey Realejos, the best teams.

The fifth gala of sport took place in the crowded Basilio Labrador sports complex.

The Mayor, Manuel Domínguez, and councillor for sports, Benito Dévora, presented the merit awards for the successes of 2016.

The title of best individual female athlete was awarded to Tenerife CajaCanaraias athlete, Naná Jacob Russo while the best male athlete was paraglider Yeray González González.

The prize for the best promise in recreational sport went to María Rodríguez Rodríguez de la Sierra, member of the Martiánez Swimming Club.

The Intara Tenerife Club of Rhythmic Gymnastics of First Category was female team of the year while the men’s title went to the Volleyball Club Mencey Realejos in the children’s category for volleyball and beach volleyball.

A series of special recognitions was also presented to different entities or perso-nalities linked in one way or another to Los Realejos sport.

Recipients included the journalist Cipriano García Díaz; Obdulia Molina Luis, a member of the Masters section of the Club Natación Reales at the age of 73; and José Carlos Ruiz, champion of the Spanish Championship of Mountain Races in his category for the last five editions.

The Sports Legend was awarded to the football referee Domingo Dorta Rodríguez, with more than 40 years dedicated to this task in the different stadiums of the islands.

The current president of the Interinsular Federation of Automovilismo of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Benito Rodríguez Rodriguez, received the recognition of the Sport Trajectory because of his long association to the world of motorsport.

Each year a distinction is awarded to one of the companies or entities collaborating with sport, a title awarded to the sports company Eli Sports, for its support to the activities that are held in the municipality and more than 20 years of commercial experience.

Seventeen athletes were also thanked for taking part in a special sports promotion campaign.

In his speech, the Mayor highlighted “the quantity and quality of recreational athletes and the diversity of modalities in which they proudly carry the name of our municipality with pride.”
