Fuerteventura aims to deal with flight delays within one hour

Tourism chiefs on Fuerteventura are drawing up a new plan so that any holidaymaker facing a plane delay receives the best possible treatment.

A meeting has been held between the Cabildo and airport officials, including baggage handlers.

Island leaders believe delays and the way they are dealt with could give the tourist a bad image of Fuerteventura. They want to make sure this doesn’t happen and that delays and what happens once they are announced are dealt with quickly and efficiently.

Those attending the meeting included Cabildo president, Marcial Morales and airport director, Luis López Chapí.

Measures to be taken include the creation and availability of a whatsapp programme to announce delays as soon as possible.

If it was necessary to put passengers up in an hotel, then transport would be immediately arranged and the hotels booked.

To this end, a special co-ordination group has been set up, with representatives of the airport, airlines, taxi firms and tour operators.

Marcial Morales said the delays happened very infre-quently but when they did, if not handled properly, then it could impact on people’s opinion of the island. The general aim is to provide answers to delays within an hour.

Minister of Tourism, Blas Acosta said customers shouldn’t be the ones inconvenienced by an aircraft problem or cancellation.

Delegate of handling company, Groundforce, Guillermo Pérez confirmed: “We are making all arrangements with bus companies, taxis and hotel to accommodate passengers in case of cancellation. “
