La Orotava choir plans 40th anniversary concert to mark great career

One of the leading choirs not just in the north of Tenerife but across the Canary Islands is celebrating a very special anniversary in style.

La Orotava’s Lyceum of Taoro Polyphonic Choir is marking 40 years with a varied programme of events, including an anniversary concert on October 24th.

Members of the public are being invited to join in the celebrations of the choir’s cultural, social and musical career in the archipelago, Spanish mainland and Europe.

Their performances have seen many high moments and left their mark wherever they have gone.

This talented choral group was founded in 1975 by Francisco González Luis, director and Luis González Acebal as president of the Liceo de Taoro Cultural So-ciety.

Today, it is directed by Javier Quintero Pérez, at the helm since 2013 and still both a singer and pianist.

The first public presentation took place in June of that year on the occasion of the feast of Corpus Christi in La Orotava.

In their first eight years, they took part in all local events and participated in several opera performances, as well as concerts in Madrid, Galicia, Asturias and Santander, thus beginning its valuable and long career.

From 1984, the choir took on a different mantle to the ones on the scene at the time, presenting their own com-positions under the leadership of Carlos Alfonso Cedrés.

The choir enjoyed a fruitful time touring around the peninsula and abroad, highlighting Galicia, Portugal, Burgos, Segovia, Málaga, Huelva and France and made their first recording in 1996.

In 1998, they travelled through France and Italy, singing a Pontifical Mass in St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome, one of its landmarks and one of the masterful performances in the interpretation of religious music.

The choir has always been present at all social, cultural and religious events and has collaborated on various projects with the Tenerife Symphony Orchestra and Music Group of Orotava.

The Coral Infantil Liceo de Taoro was formed in 2011 to cater for the younger gene-ration.

Highlights of the 40 years are included in an exhibition. The main anniversary concert takes place at 8.30pm on October 24th with the colla-boration of various other groups.
