Savouring the Rendezvous Experience at Golf del Sur

page 49

Having a hugely successful formula has not led to the fantastic Rendezvous Restaurant on the Golf del Sur resting on its laurels.

Far from it. Even though manager Stuart Scott and his team continue to receive rave reviews for their excellent service and gorgeous food, they are always moving forward.

Nothing here is taken for granted. People may well return time and time again, many of them having been customers since the restaurant first opened in 2009, but complacency is something they will never find.

Everything needs to move with the times and the Rendezvous is no exception.

Back to enjoy a family meal, it was great to meet up with Stuart and it was us that first used the description of a “more modern approach” because we had clocked the subtle changes.

The cuisine here has always been really excellent with great attention to detail but we noticed straight away that the dishes looked like works of art. The starters, in particular, looked absolutely stunning with beautiful colours and an artistic streak which made them resemble a painting.

Stuart confirmed our impressions, telling us: “I think we have evolved.”

It should be stressed from the outset that the Rendezvous has neither changed hands or altered its basic ethos of providing customers of all ages and nationalities with the very best eating experience they could hope to have here on Tenerife.

Chef Colin is still at the helm, someone Stuart describes as one of the unsung heroes. He also praises his hard-working team which has a number of new faces, all hugely pleasant and confident in the work they do.

Stuart never takes praise without mentioning his team because he says it is very much a joint approach and one which keeps the Rendezvous as one of the best restaurants on the island with prices people still can afford.

We went along on one of the hottest nights of the summer and were delighted to be able to sit outside on the extensive terrace. As before, the interior of the restaurant is stunning but it is always nice to take advantage of the Tenerife weather.

You will find the Rendezvous at the Winter Gardens. The bistro and bar is downstairs whilst the restaurant is on the first floor overlooing the bowling green. The restaurant is open every evening from 6pm and to make sure you guarantee a table, prior reservation is recommended.

The emphasis is on very good quality food, freshly prepared and presented in an innovative and contemporary way.

All of this comes under the banner of the “Rendezvous Experience”, one you take away and savour and of course, want to repeat as soon as you can!

One of the hardest parts of our review night was what to choose from the extensive menu but the dishes we opted for included the most delicious starter of morcilla, which is traditional Canary black pudding, sweeter and nuttier than the norm. This was served with chilli pepper and garlic oil, with typical Canary sauces and crusty bread (5.75 euros).

My partner had warmed goats cheese with a peppered bruschetta drizzled with olive oil and served with a beetroot and herb leafed salad (6.45 euros).

As you would expect, the main dishes on the menu include chicken, meat, fish, vegetarian, salads, grills, the chef’s specials and also for children. If you want anything served in a special way or to fit in with dietary requirements, all you have to do is to ask.

After such delicious starters, the scene was set for my partner’s Rendezvous favourite, rump steak and Guinness pie in a light puff pastry case (11.95 euros) which was delicious. The meat was so soft, it literally fell apart.

I opted for a chicken stroganoff, featuring strips of chicken coated in paprika in a mushroom and brandy cream served with basmati rice (10.95 euros). Simply divine.

It’s a feature of the restaurant that there are dishes to suit all pockets ie perhaps a fillet steak of prime beef for 17.50 euros or sauteed breast of chicken with Scottish black pudding with sweet honey rum sauce for 11.50 euros. You add your extras such as sauces and side dishes because this choice aspect seems to fit in well with what Rendezvous customers want.

Obviously it works. For the last five years, the Rendezvous has received Tripadvisor’s Certificate of Excellence and now is in its coveted Hall of Fame as a result.

With our dinner, we enjoyed a bottle of Verdeal, aromatic and dry, but there are many choices, including a good house wine at 10.95 euros.

Having savoured a lovely meal, we couldn’t leave without having a dessert and were thrilled with the Baileys and malteser cheesecake and the champagne sorbet which came as a huge surprise because of its “deconstruction”. You have to order one to find out what that means!

We finished off our meal with a glass each of the most gorgeous iced limonella which is now being produced by a family firm in Guimar. This was fantastic; a Canary success story waiting to flourish, we think.

So, once again, we left for home having experienced yet another lovely evening out at the Rendezvous which is waiting to do the same for you.
