Santa Cruz distributes 5,000 beach ashtrays in new campaign
Thousands of portable ashtrays have been distributed to beach users in Santa Cruz in order to “clean up their act”.
The city council is aware that the environment of the beach is being spoilt by thousands of cigarette butts which are thrown down on the sand and the situation gets even worse in the busy summer.
Last weekend, volunteers from the Red Cross helped to distribute 5,000 portable ashtrays on the beaches of Las Teresitas and Las Gaviotas.
Local councillor, Carlos Correa said the beach cleaners were finding a huge number of cigarette butts buried in the sand and they were very difficult to deal with.
He called on everyone to help with the campaign and to use the little ashtrays which are conical, very small, reusable and portable.
