Rumpole by John Mortimer
This beautiful Folio Society book with illustrations that truly envisage the time and place around the Old Bailey contains ten of the favourite stories of the author John Mortimer.
These stories are gentle stories that make you smile, remind you of an England that seems to have disappeared and headed by a larger-than-life character that you cannot help warming to.
The icing on the cake of this edition is the six page introduction by the author himself whose thoughts on how and why he invented the character are a delight to read. For those of us old enough to remember, the author mentions Leo McKern as the actor in the TV productions who in his opinion was the perfect Rumpole.
Read slowly and with affection. Enjoy !
P.S. It is, of course, from this author that the phrases “she who must be obeyed” and “old darling” came into the English language.
