The bistro with the friendly welcome

The Rendezvous Bar and Bistro at Golf del Sur is the “companion” to the Rendezvous Restaurant at the immaculately-kept Winter Gardens complex.

I use the word “companion” because “little sister” or “little brother” somehow suggests it has a lesser profile but this is certainly not the case.

We have dined at the upstairs Rendezvous Restau-rant on several occasions and absolutely loved it, as do diners of all nationalities who return time and time again. But the Rendezvous Bar and Bistro is just as popular and serves great food in very generous portions at affordable prices. No wonder the two of them together offer people a really good double choice.

The Rendezvous Bar and Bistro is on the lower level of the Winter Gardens ie. the ground level and is just metres away from the pristine bowling green. It is hugely interesting to watch the players with their skill and concentration. You should note that there is accessibility to all as the Winter Gardens has disabled ramps and a lift and you can go via the front entrance (ie as you drive into Golf del Sur along the one way system or via the back which is near the market site). There is always a parking space available.

The Bar and Bistro is open all day and evening from 9am to close whilst the Restaurant opens at 6pm. We had already enjoyed the full English breakfast on two previous occasions as well as lunch when I had the biggest ploughman’s I had ever been served! Anothere time, when we went for coffee, I remember watching in amused anticipation as a lady ordered a ploughman’s and nearly fell off her seat when it arrived.

We therefore went along for our review meal with high hopes and were not disappointed. It was a lovely warm night with a bit of a blustery wind so we went for the half-way house, taking a table outside but under the canopy. It was just getting dark so we were able to admire the bowling green and the gardens amidst the pretty lighting. We had family staying with us so took them along as our treat but it certainly meant we got a full taste of the menu.

The first thing to say is that those portions of the famed ploughman’s were echoed in our dishes this time as well. We chose from the main evening menu available from 6pm to 10pm but were just as impressed with the lunches and snacks.

Our starters included chef’s home-made soup of the day (3.95 euros), cheesy nachos with tomato salsa (3.75 euros), spicy chicken goujons with sweet chilli or garlic dip (3.95 euros) and garlic Atlantic prawns with crusty bread (5.75 euros). The latter, said my son, were “simply gorgeous” and the best he had tasted.

The main courses offered everything from half roasted chicken (7.50 euros) to the bistro mixed grill with minute steak, chicken breast, bacon and sausage) with tomato, mushrooms or onions (10.95 euros). Everything wafting by looked delicious and gave off a mouth-watering aroma but it still took us all a good ten minutes to decide. We were well looked after by Kelly and bless her patience!

I opted for the chilli con carne with rice and nachos at 7.95 euros and the chef was so helpful to meet my request for some soured cream as an accompaniment. My husband went for a cheese burger which came with chips and vegetables (8.65 euros) whilst the two “youngsters” both wanted a steak. All the plates came full to the brim, leaving us totally full up and even having to decline a pudding, the likes of which include chocolate fudge cake at 4.50 euros and chef’s crumble at 4.25 euros. Next time, we will be prepared!

If you don’t think your appetite which will stretch this far, why not go for the light bites. The Rendezvous platter for 5.75 euros has spiced chicken goujons, potato wedges, onion rings, garlic bread and battered hake fingers with a garlic dip. The sort of dish you could eat anywhere at any time! There are also baked jacket potatoes with chicken korma, chilli con carne or cheese and coleslaw (5.75 euros and 5.50 euros), crisp baguettes or a quarter pound burger topped with cheese and bacon in a fresh bun with mayonnaise and crisp lettuce (5.50 euros).

On the Bar and Bistro menu, there are always chef specials with a starter and two main dishes. On our evening, they were gripped lamp chump chops with a rosemary and plum sauce, served with fresh vegetables or salad and a choice of potatoes (8.50 euros) or pan fried chicken breast in a blue cheese and bacon cream sauce served with salad or vegetables and a choice of potatoes (8.75 euros). These dishes are perhaps more reflective of the menu upstairs in the Rendezvous Restaurant but give the bistro diner that extra option.

There is a children’s menu for 4.95 euros and very reasonably priced drinks, with a bottle of house white at 6.50 euros.

Next on our agenda will have to be a Sunday visit for the traditional roast (beef, pork, chicken or lamb) at 8.95 euros as we can just imagine the portion sizes! Booking is recommended.

When visiting the Bar and Bistro, I always make a point of visiting the ladies as they are superbly decorated. You can also sit by the bar or lounge around on the very very comfortable squashy sofas though you might not want to get up afterwards! There are TV screens for sport and popular programmes but these are not intrusive.

Our review night saw quite a few tables occupied but it was neither noisy or intrusive. It was a Thursday so were were happy to listen to the great voice of Andy Phillips who also entertains on a Sunday.

The Rendezvous Bar and Bistro is very much for local residents and holiday-makers alike and has certainly built up a great following. Special events such as Halloween are always celebrated and attract a big crowd, as do charity nights and other functions, Christmas included of course.

There are some lovely comments and picture on their Facebook site where you can catch up with what is happening, sporting fixtures etc and glowing praise on TripAdvisor.

This one particularly caught my eye and it really says it all about both restaurants: “We visited both the Rendezvous Restaurant and Bar/Bistro and after our first visit didn’t feel the need to go anywhere else. Both establishments offered extensive menus and excellent value for money. The staff were friendly, helpful and gave excellent service. We would highly recommend that visitors to Gulf del Sur visit the Rendezvous where they will be guaranteed a warm welcome and excellent food in wonderful surroundings.”

What more is there to say than go along and see for yourself! You might even be inspired to take up bowling or have a go at the Wednesday fun bowls morning.
