More cultural tourism for La Laguna

La Laguna is to start offering guided tours led by architects of three of its most emblematic buildings.

The venture is expected to start within the next few days and each tour will last an hour and a half.

The local council has teamed up with travel agency Arquirutas to give people a unique insight into the old Convento de Santo Domingo, Casa Alvarado Bracamonte or Casa de Los Capitane and the Adrián Alemán municipal library.

Arquirutas specialise in these sort of attractions to show the contemporary architecture of cities, from new buildings to those rehabilitated since 2000.

A new feature of these routes is that they will be taken by professional architects who have a high knowledge of the buildings and their history. At present, excursions in La Laguna are carried out in Spanish , Catalan, English , French , German, Italian , Portuguese and Polish but the company is looking to expand its market with Chinese and Russian. The agency arranges visits of other local buildings over and above the three new ones.

Cultural tourism is seen as a growing trend in Europe as visitors are looking for more than just the sand and sea. Arquirutas was formed in Madrid two years ago but is already working in La Matanza , Los Realejos , El Sauzal , Los Silos and Guía de Isora and is currently in negotiations with other municipalities.
