Disgust at mugging for 23 euros
Police and passers-by were shocked and angry after a 78-year-old woman was mugged for the sake of a 20 euros note and small change.
The attack happened in Los Cristianos and thanks to members of the public who gave chase, a man in his early 20s from La Palma was arrested.
The victim was walking along a road near the old port in the middle of the afternoon when the thief tried to snatch her handbag. She kept hold of it despite falling on the floor but the man eventually pulled it away from her and ran away.
Stunned at the brutality, onlookers chased him and he was arrested by the police. The bag contained a purse with 20 euros and 2.58 euros in cash. Those who gave chase included two of the victim’s children.
The mugging was made even worse because it was in the broad daylight, at 2pm on a Sunday afternoon, and in a very public rather than isolated place.
