Children on board illegal boat
Illegal immigrants are still trying to reach the Canary Islands in small boats, despite the hazardous journey involved.
One of the latest “pateras” to be intercepted was off the coast of La Graciosa, which is often described as the eighth Canary island and is particularly isolated and small.
There were at least eight children, even though previous attempts have often led to serious illness through dehydration and even deaths from drowning.
The Civil Guard confirmed that more than 20 immigrants were on board as this was the number arrested. Others, possibly up to another seven, may well have escaped. All of those arrested were of North African origin.
The alert was raised by a member of the public who spotted the boat drifting off La Graciosa (near Lanzarote) and called the police. It was around 9am in the morning. All of the occupants were in relatively good health on this occasion.
