Plea over La Gomera honey
The Cabildo on La Gomera is asking the Spanish Government to back its case for protection of the island’s unique palm honey.
The production and processing techniques have been passed down from generation to generation and the island considers it is part of its heritage which needs official recognition. There are eight businesses dedicated to its manufacture and a great number of jobs depend on them.
A meeting has taken place with representatives from the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and the Environment to try and gain official protection. To this end, a detailed report has been prepared to send to the European Commission.
La Gomera wants palm honey to have its own label.
