Car or no car?

There are many many people who have lived on or have visited the island for years on a long term basis who continue to hire a car when here, either on a long term basis or on an and off basis when needed idea.

Whilst we are not saying that this can and does suit a lot of people, the cost of buying and keeping a car insured, ITV and running are generally quite a lot cheaper than the UK and when compared with rental payments most people would save money and recoup the “dead” money in a fairly short period of time.

Of course you then have the added convenience that having a car gives and the capability to visit places that are not on a bus route, for example some of the best restaurants on the island cannot be reached by public transport and those that are usually mean a very long journey to get there meaning you are not relaxed for your outing.

If you buy a car you will of course need to insure it but in general terms insurance is a lot cheaper than similar cover in the UK. It is against the law to have a car in Spain without having it insured even if it is off the road for say 4-6 months of any one year. There is a central register that all Insurance companies, brokers and agents have to register all policies on, similar to the UK one and this means that the police can check the car is insured if they stop you.

Some people´s reasons for not wanting to drive a car, rental or their own, is that they would be driving on the “wrong” side of the road and car. Whilst this seems strange in the beginning you soon get used to it and can practice on quieter roads to gain confidence. Motorway driving here is best compared to driving on a dual carriage way in the UK with the exception of the TF5 in Santa Cruz heading towards Puerto de la Cruz which in parts has five lanes but for the most part it is two lanes.

So if you live here permanently, or are a swallow or long term winter resident before you rent for your next long stint have a think about purchasing your own.
