A jewel for ocean treasure stories
The Canary Islands are becoming a favourite place to record stories under the sea.
Tenerife has recently hosted the Canary Underwater Video Championships and will also be the location for the Spanish Championships in September. It has also been announced that the world championships will be on the island in 2014.
Marine divers from through-out the world are attracted to the Canaries because of the wealth of interest on the ocean bed, making underwater photography, videos and apnea diving very popular. All these events are considered to be a huge boost for promotion of the islands.
Creativity, skill and imagination are all needed to shoot videos or take pictures in the water. These attributes were clearly demonstrated by the winners of the Canary competition held in Arona and specifically in Las Galletas. Jorge López and Nuria Rizo came first, Juan Raya and Mark Ellis were second and Antonio Javier Luis Gutiérrez and Juan Jesús Palenzuela were third.
As the top three ranking teams, they qualify for the Spanish championships which were last year held in El Hierro and now move on to Tenerife. There will be categories for photography and videos and will attract around 100 competitors from all over the country.
