Cabildo fights “intolerable” treatment
Tenerife Cabildo has stepped up its criticism of the airport authority AENA, saying its attitude towards the island is “intolerable” and an “insult”.
President, Ricardo Melchior was due to have a meeting on April 9th with AENA’s national chief who says controversy has arisen because of a misunderstanding.
But Sr. Melchior says the clash with the airport authority has been ongoing and is not confined to a recent incident when the Cabildo was refused permission to hold a press conference at the south airport to launch the new BA to Gatwick flights.
He estimates that AENA claws in at least 30 million euro from the two airports in Tenerife but is giving back just a fraction. He says this figure is around 1.8 million euro whilst the rest goes elsewhere in the Canaries.
The Cabildo is currently fighting for extended opening hours at the north airport but is wondering whether AENA will say no to this as well.
