Roller Derby catches on in Tenerife
A new sport is capturing an army of fans in Tenerife. It’s “Roller Derby”.
This is no ordinary roller-skating, however. It’s a tough sport which requires harsh discipline and many hours of training a week. It’s a great hit in America and is set to be the next big thing in Tenerife.
The island already has one of the best teams in Spain, Tenerife Roller Derby who will play next on January 19th against Roller Derby Porto, the leaders in Portugal. It will be held at “Camurria Pancho” where training and matches are held, starting at 7pm but the doors open at 6pm.
The sport is at the moment mostly practised by women and is performed on an oval track. The Tenerife team was formed in 2010 after its captain had studied in Manchester and accounted the sport for the first time. She came back to Tenerife deter-mined to form a team and today, two years on, the team has about 35 skaters and several referees.
The game on January 19th will be followed by post-entertainment with DJs at the Aguere Espacio Cultural, La Laguna from 11pm. All interested are invited to find out more through Facebook.
