New 5€ note from May
A new five euro note is to come into circulation from May 2nd.
The new design was unveiled by the European Central Bank last week in Frankfurt. It is called “Europa” and features several advances in security over the previous batch of notes first printed in January 2002.
From May 2nd, both the old and new five euro notes will remain legal tender until the old ones begin to phase out. The day of cessation will be announced later although they retain their value indefinitely and could be exchanged for an unlimited period in domestic banks.
The ECB intends to replace further notes in ascending order of value over the next few years.
