El Hierro needs 75% off flights
The Government is being accused of “total insensitivity” towards El Hierro and the difficult situation it is trying to overcome.
Senator for the Independent-Coalition Canaria (AHI-CC), Narvay Quintero says the island is facing a double crisis because of the economic recession and the effects of last year’s volcanic activity.
He believes the Government has not fulfilled pledges made last year to help El Hierro in terms of connectivity and wants air and sea travel to be made substantially cheaper.
Sr. Quintero was intending to raise the matter in the Upper House this week and accuses Minister of Development, Ana Pastor of going back on promises.
He says airlines have increased their prices since January 1st which represents a serious situation for El Hierro.
Last summer, he points out, a motion was agreed to urge the Government to give the Canaries a specific grant of three million euros for shipping connections between Tenerife and El Hierro to alleviate the effects of the crisis.
He also wants to see a 75% discount on airline tickets from Tenerife and Gran Canaria to El Hierro for a year which would help to boost passenger numbers.
The senator also says there was an agreement not to implement increased airport charges in 2013.
